Stewardship

StewardshipWhat is Stewardship?

Stewardship may be one of the most misunderstood, misused and even abused words in the church. Yet, the concept of stewardship is one of the most important and foundational principles of the Christian life. It is our hope that the information provided in this section of our website will assist you in gaining a proper understanding of the concept of stewardship. But even more importantly, we hope you come to comprehend the massive practical ramifications a proper understanding of stewardship will have on our attitudes and our lifestyles regarding all our possessions – our remaining time, our unique talents and accumulated treasures.

Tithing vs. Stewardship

Stewardship versus Tithing

Stewardship may be one of the most misused words in the Bible. Quite often it is used synonymously (different word with the same meaning) with tithing. But we propose that stewardship and tithing are not synonyms at all. They are actually antonyms (opposites). So, if they are antonymous, what is the difference between Stewardship and Tithing?

TITHING
has to do with what we GIVE.

STEWARDSHIP
has to do with what we KEEP.

“Tithing is about how much we write the check for. Stewardship is about what we are doing with what is left in the checkbook after the check is written.”

Stewardship Question
Which of these three questions do you think best represents the proper stewardship attitude of a Christian?

  1. WHAT DO I WANT TO DO WITH MY WEALTH?
  2. WHAT DO I WANT TO DO WITH GOD’S WEALTH?
  3. WHAT DOES GOD WANT ME TO DO WITH HIS WEALTH?

Every Christian we have ever talked to agrees that #3 is the correct answer. And this is where the practical disconnect comes into play. Even though everyone agrees that #3 is the correct answer, virtually everyone lives their lives like #2 is the correct answer. They are more than happy to acknowledge that God owns everything, but they still want to make all the decisions on how their wealth will be spent, invested, given away, etc. without ever consulting with the Owner to determine what are His wishes for how these resources should be used.

How we answer and apply this stewardship question will have a massive impact on how we choose to live out our lives and what we choose to do with the accumulated worldly treasures with which we have been entrusted.
